People generally prefer to finish mowing quickly, and Honda capitalizes on this for excellent publicity. Following several records, here is the latest: the Honda Mean Mover V2, an object resembling a garden machine, can achieve a speed of exactly 160.9 km/h in just 6.285 seconds.

The record was also authenticated by an official from the Guinness Book of Records, with the average of two runs in opposite directions on a straight section being registered as a world record. The Honda machine can only be considered a lawnmower from a distance; one only needs to look at the welded tubular frame into which the 999 cc, 200 horsepower inline-four engine from a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade motorcycle has been built.

The rules by which this can be considered a lawnmower are relatively lenient. The first and most important criterion is that the device must look like a lawnmower, which the creators achieved by using the body panels and grass collector of a genuine Honda lawnmower. The other crucial criterion is that the machine must be capable of mowing grass. The Mean Mover V2 uses an electric motor to spin its carbon fiber blades at the bottom, meaning there is no mechanical connection between the drive and the mowing section. It performs only the bare minimum required, or to be clear: the machine is not capable of maintaining a lawn while traveling at 200 km/h. Technically, the structure, weighing 140 kilograms, most closely resembles a raised, front-engined go-kart, giving it a slightly better power-to-weight ratio than a Bugatti Chiron.

The record was set at Lausitzring in Germany by British racer and stuntwoman Jessica Hawkins, who sits in a highly race-car-like, almost reclined position on the machine, which has virtually no suspension. The video also shows that only the deformation of the tires and frame provides some minimal suspension, but not much: the machine bounces.

This is not Honda’s first lawnmower record; the first generation of the Mean Mover was built in 2013, capable of a top speed of 187.6 km/h, then with a V2 Honda engine block. The top speed of the new, four-cylinder Mean Mover V2 (the V2 in the name refers to the second version) was also measured at 150.9 mph, or 243 km/h. What is the lesson from this? Firstly, it’s brilliant how Honda generates publicity for its small engine division, though it would be harder with a rototiller, snow blower, or leaf blower. Secondly, Jessica is indeed a brave woman.
